| Nylon Keel Rollers - Standard replacements for the 5 inch rubber trailer rollers. Exceptional service life - never need replacing. £12 each incl vat.
Nylon keel rollers offer a real alternative to the trouble associated with conventional rubber rollers. The problem with rubber rollers is that the total weight of the boat, engine and gear is localised on a very small area - ie five or six points of contact on the trailer rollers. the consequence is that the rollers flatten and will no longer rotate. This makes the job of rolling the boat off of the trailer extremely difficult and normally will require floating her off. Recovery is also made more difficult because of large amounts of friction set up between the rollers and the keel as the boat is winched on. This has the effect of tiring the winchman and stressing the winch and strap/cable. Nylon rollers are very tough and will not flatten at all under the weight of the boat. They are totally corrosion proof, virtually indestructible and have a long service life. Launching off a beach is easily accomplished by pushing the trailer into sufficient water to just float the boat when she's off the trailer ( about nine inches for the average dinghy) and gently raising the draw-bar. This causes the boat to slide off - the speed being controlled by the height of the bar. A very significant advantage here is that because the boat is being launched in shallower water the hub bearings are less likely to be damaged. When launching from a sloping slipway it is advisable to launch with the winch strap still attached to control the speed of launch. An additional tip is to ensure that when towing the boat, she is well strapped down for maximum security. In summary, the advantages of a switch to nylon rollers are:-
- Easy single handed launching
- Less likelihood of damage to wheel bearings
- Dry launch on to beach possible
- Easier recovery
- Less strain on winch and webbing
- Long life of rollers and less maintenance
- Cost effective - outlive rubber rollers many times over
Rollers are made from Nylon 66 and we have stock sizes to fit most trailers. Special sizes can be machined to your requirements. The standard 5" roller to suit axle pins of 1/2", 17mm, and 19mm are £10 inc vat plus carriage.
